On Monday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone. This talk came at a time when the US has imposed high import taxes on India because it is buying oil from Russia. After the call, Zelensky said that India’s support is very important for Ukraine’s efforts to bring peace.

Participation in Ukraine-related decisions is essential

Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine’s involvement is mandatory in any resolution. He said it is important that India supports their peace efforts and agrees that Ukraine should have a direct role in every decision related to the country. He added that decisions made without Ukraine’s participation cannot yield lasting results.

India’s commitment

PM Modi also confirmed the conversation on ‘X’ (primarily Twitter). He said, “I reiterated India’s consistent policy to President Zelensky that a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict is necessary. India is willing to contribute in every possible way,” he said, adding that the country is dedicated to strengthening its bilateral ties with Ukraine. This statement comes at a time when expectations are rising about India’s mediating role on the global stage.

Zelensky’s view on Russian energy

“As the war enters its fourth year, President Zelensky emphasised the importance of increasing pressure on Russia. He urged the international community to impose strict restrictions on Russia’s energy exports, especially oil, to weaken Russia’s economic strength. He said limiting the export of Russian oil and energy resources is essential to weaken Russia’s economic power to continue the war.

US tariff pressure on India

Meanwhile, the US has imposed import tariffs of up to 50% on India for purchasing oil from Russia. US President Donald Trump accused India of fuelling the ‘war machine’ by buying oil from Russia and announced an additional 25% tariff on India for this reason.
